Basel is an antitrust and trade regulation attorney with a passion for building stronger towns and vibrant rural economies.
Basel's experience includes representing farmers in litigation against meat processors under the Packers and Stockyards Act, defending workers against employers who seek to enforce illegal noncompete agreements, and advocating for the interests of farmers, small businesses, workers and consumers before the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice Antitrust Division, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Basel is also the author of the landmark report on the state of competition in America's agriculture system, "Kings Over the Necessaries of Life": Monopolization and the Elimination of Competition in America's Agriculture System, which was commissioned and published by Farm Action in 2024.
Basel has been featured in or on Reuters, AP, Time Magazine, CNBC, The Today Show, Politico, The American Prospect, DTN-PF, Daily Yonder, and other media outlets. He also regularly participates in panels and conferences related to his work. For example, Basel recently joined a panel on rural entrepreneurial ecosystems at the 2022 Radically Rural Conference in Keene, NH, and a panel on the Right to Repair at the 2023 ABA Antitrust Section's Annual Spring Meeting in Washington, DC.
